IELTS preparation

This is one of those questions often asked by many people. The purpose of this article is to explain how I prepared for my IELTS- Academic exam. Please note that the contents of this article are based on my own experience and may not be applicable to everyone.

I studied every day (Weekends as well) – I used to work in my university as a teaching assistant when I first took my IELTS test. Time was somewhat limited as I lived far from work and had to commute daily. It consumed a significant amount of time, despite, I allocated 1-2 hr every day to practice IELTS. The key is to study/practice every day.

I read books (and I still do)– Reading books/ Newspapers/magazines is essential because IELTS has a reading component. This doesn’t mean that people who are not fond of reading will get a low band score. Remember, IELTS is a test, and you are given a specific time window to complete it. Having some practice with reading will save a lot of time.

Speak in English– If you want to improve your spoken English, you need to talk. The same principle applies to IELTS. Talking with your friends and family is one way you can improve spoken English. I don’t recommend memorizing answers because questions tend to change frequently. Other than talking with friends, you can also start listening to the news to improve your English. Be careful with the pronunciation, if you are unsure how to pronounce a particular word, search it on google. The Internet can be a great supporting system.
